Tasting notes
(a 45/45/10 blend of nebbiolo from Bussia, barbera from the best old vines on the Ginestra hill and cabernet sauvignon in Ginestra; beginning with the 2011 vintage, this wine will be 50/50 nebbiolo and barbera, as it originally was): Bright ruby. Aromas of black cherry, redcurrant, chocolate, graphite and sexy oak. Very sweet, dense and rich, with harmonious ripe acidity energizing this broad blend. Finishes with suave tannins and terrific verve and length. The cabernet stands out today but Fantino says it will fade into the wine as it ages. An excellent vintage for this famous super-Piedmont wine.

The 2008 Langhe Rosso Monprà comes across as a touch compact and light in this vintage. The oak is a bit pronounced, suggesting the fruit lacks a measure of richness and stuffing to fully handle the oak. Sweet dark cherries, flowers and spices are some of the aromas and flavors that take shape in the glass.
