Tasting notes
This is the first vintage that block numbers are listed on the labels of the Devil Proof wines. “We’re getting more granular with how we’re labeling,” winemaker Jesse Katz explains. “This is the OG block, the original block we leased.” The 2022 Malbec Farrow Ranch Block 17 was matured for 22 months in 90% new French oak. Deep ruby in color, the nose offers gobs of black cherry, plum and blueberry aromas and slowly unfurling nuances of cast iron, aniseed, chocolate and violet. Hedonistic and pure, the palate offers tremendous depth of flavor and singular iron-and-violet character. It’s structured by plush, powdery tannins and seamless acidity and has a long, perfumed finish. Due to the severe heat wave in September and subsequent sorting, Katz notes, “This took a pretty big hit in production in 2022.” 165 cases were made.
