Light pink with an orange hue. Lively strawberry, blood orange and mineral aromas are underscored by a toasty, gently leesy quality. Gains a floral component with air and offers gently sweet red berry and orchard fruit flavors and a hint of bitter citrus zest. Spreads out on the finish, which echoes the blood orange note and lingers with good, dusty, mineral-driven persistence. (I also retasted the 1999 Grand Cru Brut and found a creamy, floral character on display, with the mineral elements starting to recede. It is still youthful but can be enjoyed now.)

The 2000 Brut Rosé Cuvée Louise is a delicate, pale-colored wine that reveals gorgeous inner sweetness in its perfumed fruit. This too is a deceptively medium-bodied offering but the wine offers terrific complexity as notes of smoke, minerals and candied red fruits follow through on the long finish. The style remains taut and focused, but the wine should soften as it ages in bottle.

This large, venerable estate makes a wide range of wines, the best of which is the Cuvee Louise. The estate does not disclose disgorgement dates, but in general the wines receive six to nine months on the cork prior to be being released. Importer: Vranken Pommery America, New York, NY; tel. Tasted blind. Very pale bronze – only just rosé! Lively, sinewy nose with real refreshment. Very complete and beautifully balanced. Substantial on the palate but not old and with real life, potential and refreshment value. Clean, neat, persistent finish for a change. (JR)
