Score 88/100 · Drink 2020-2023, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, May 2020

The first bottle that I opened was not showing as it should, so I opened the back-up a bottle, which was an improvement. The 2017 Syrah Upland Vineyard opens with a black-fruited core with integrated black peppercorn spices and a dusty olive expression. Full-bodied, the wine is soft yet elegant in the mouth, with oak tones that lift the structured palate and focused fruits flavors with an earth-driven core. The wine is classic and pleasantly spiced for a Syrah, ending with a long, drawn-out finish. 120 cases produced.

The inky colored 2017 Syrah Upland Vineyard comes from a site in the Snipes Mountain AVA and was not destemmed and was brought up in neutral oak. It also includes a splash of co-fermented Viognier. Crazy blueberry fruit, licorice, asphalt, and pepper notes flow to a medium-bodied wine that was either harvested way too early or over-acidified, as it has biting, almost citric levels of acidity. I'm surprised to see a wine like this from Ryan, who normally produces impeccably balanced wines. Tasted twice.
