The 2009 Old Patch Shiraz has a Christmas cake spice character on the nose, alongside black cherry, raspberry, blackcurrant and licorice. It is succulent, fresh and ductile and a little chewy in its way. What a wine. This is impressive, powerful, excellent. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Good rain through winter and spring. The first week of February saw warmer weather with temperatures in the high 30s °C. This dehydrated the berries, lifted the sugars and toughened the skins whilst maintaining a great balance of flavours. pH 3.51, TA 7.51 g/l. Deep crimson. Rich and sooth – much fruitier and more obvious than the 2010 which is arguably the most interesting. Rich and sweet and balsam. Acid sticks out a tad. More dramatic but not quite a graceful as the 2010. (JR)
