Vivid ruby. An intensely perfumed bouquet displays scents of fresh dark berries, pungent flowers and peppery spices, with a pipe tobacco quality building with air. Plush blueberry and black raspberry flavors are framed and lifted by tangy acidity. Finishes sweet and very long, with repeating spice and floral notes and smooth, harmonious tannins.

Starting off the two Vacqueyras, the 2012 Garrigues checks in as a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, all of which spent 12-18 months in cement tanks. It’s an outstanding effort that yields notes of sweet dark fruits, peppery herbs, licorice and solid minerality. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and chewy wine that still has some tannin to integrate, yet doesn’t have the backend depth for any extended aging. Give it another year in bottle and drink it through 2020.

(70% grenache and 30% syrah; all in concrete): Opaque ruby. Powerful, spice-laced aromas of dark berry compote, singed plum and licorice. Plush, palate-staining blackberry and blueberry flavors show impressive depth and energy and pick up a smoky nuance with air. Supple tannins add grip to the broad, sweet, very persistent finish, which echoes the blueberry note.

Dark purplish crimson. Unusually opulent on the nose! Some spice and volume of fruit. Although it does fall away a bit to marked acidity on the finish. (JR)
