Score 90/100 · Drink 2019-2030, Neal Martin, Oct 2018

The 2016 Castéra has a simple bouquet with blackberry, pot pourri and light iris aromas, pretty if not the most complex on the block. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, good depth, quite precise with cedar and white pepper towards the persistent finish. This gets better with aeration, gaining more precision and ends up as a really, very fine Médoc Cru Bourgeois. Tasted at the Cru Bourgeois tasting in London.

65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. Deep crimson. Distinctive on the nose – the fragrance almost red-fruited, plus a touch of vanilla and crushed herbs. Lightish but balanced on the palate. Dry-textured, rather hard work. (JH)
