Score 94/100 · Drink 2023-2038, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jul 2020

Compared to the 2015 vintage that I tasted at the same time, the Andrea Oberto 2016 Barolo Albarella is a bit tighter, more focused and linear in character. Both wines share a rather mild, lean-bodied approach, but this wine ultimately offers more length and persistence. However, it shows less intensity in terms of body and texture. The wine ages in oak for two years. The finish is extremely smooth, silky and tapered too, with a long, slow fade out. Production is 5,200 bottles annually.

The 2016 Barolo Albarella is laced with sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, white pepper and spice. Medium in body and bright, the 2016 pulses with a real sense of energy. This is recovering from its recent bottling, but it has so much to offer; bright acids give it a real sense of invigorating vitality. The 2016 is an especially fine edition of the Albarella. For medium-term drinking, the Albarella is one of the real gems of the year.
