Aromatically this is very Pessac – in fact, Léognan – with a waft of smoke alongside that delightful wild herbal notes, a hint of charcuterie and quite a rich, dark stone and berry fruit. The minerality is evident too. Fine and quite soft and succulent for the vintage with a more gracious flow over the palate than many of its ostensible peers, the acidity well integrated. Bright and crunchy but never severe. Nice grippy tannins release a wave of sapidity on the finish.

The 2024 Couhins is a strong effort within the context of the vintage. It opens with aromas of dark berries, cassis and licorice, complemented by floral notes of iris. Medium to full-bodied, layered, and lively, it is framed by velvety tannins and concludes with a long, firm finish that should gain depth and finesse through élevage. The blend is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.

The 2024 Couhins is seriously impressive. Dark and pliant, with notable mid-palate intensity, Couhins is terrific. I am tempted to say it is surprisingly good, except the level of performance here is no longer a surprise. Dried herbs, lavender, blue/purplish fruit, licorice and light mocha notes linger on the persistent, sculpted finish. Bravo!
