Score 92/100 · Drink 2004-2015, Pierre Rovani, Jun 2002

The gravel and sweetened chamomile tea-scented 2000 Riesling Smaragd Durnsteiner Ried Schutt is medium to full-bodied, oily-textured, and exhibits great depth and concentration. This dense, layered wine is loaded with minerals and reveals an immensely long finish. Projected maturity: 2004-2015. While Americans can be found knocking on the doors of Burgundian estates every day of the year, only 5-10 per year stop at Weingut Emmerich Knoll. This statistic is bound to change as Americans come to appreciate the stunning wines Austria, and this winery, produce regularly. One of Austria's finest wineries, Knoll produces ageworthy wines that are more restrained and elegant than their good friend (and competitor) F. X. Pichler. Importer: Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. (from cask) Dried apricot, persimmon and smoldering smokiness in the nose signal a wine from somewhat dried fruit. In the mouth, the fruit combines with salts, resins, pungent spices, mocha and honey. While undeniably concentrated, this seems to be tripped up a bit by bitterness of botrytis and dried fruits in the finish.
