Tasting notes
The fresh spice and mineral-laden 2000 Riesling Smaragd Loibner Vinothekfullung, produced from the estate's highest parcel (in altitude), is a deep, intense, and concentrated offering. Its graceful character has amazing purity, focus, and length. Stones, gravel, and minerals are intermingled with spices in this stunning wine's personality. Drink it between 2006 and 2016+. While Americans can be found knocking on the doors of Burgundian estates every day of the year, only 5-10 per year stop at Weingut Emmerich Knoll. This statistic is bound to change as Americans come to appreciate the stunning wines Austria, and this winery, produce regularly. One of Austria's finest wineries, Knoll produces ageworthy wines that are more restrained and elegant than their good friend (and competitor) F. X. Pichler. Importer: Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. (from cask) This is the first year for a riesling with this label, and it comes from specific parcels in the Loibenberg. Apple, cinnamon and other brown spices predominate. The palate is lush and full, showing its 14% alcohol a bit. With so much richness and obvious extract, it's particularly tempting to give this the benefit of the doubt. Potential 1 star.
