The 2004 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru came directly from the domaine, but even perfect provenance could not redeem a wine unequivocally plagued by the so-called "green meanies". This is highlighted by being tasted with other vintages of the same wine, the cabbage-like scent shrouding what little red fruit there is. Ditto, the palate is discombobulated by greenness and a severe lack of grip on the finish. There's just no getting away from the fact that this is a wine irreparably compromised by this infamous growing season. You can't win 'em all. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.

Deep crimson with, as usual for 2004, a very pale rim. Quite a complex nose already! Layered and fresh and a little bit awkward and callow but pretty promising. Lively and pretty fresh. Wait though… Pretty tough finish. Even slightly alcoholic finish. (JR)

Light red with very pale rim. Something not 100% clean on the nose? Although there is a lot to like about the ripe fruit on the nose… Relatively lightweight and zesty, but nothing like the excitement of the Roumier 2005s. Lively and true, but perhaps just a little too nervy? (JR)

Moderately saturated medium red. Small wild red fruits, smoke and underbrush on the nose. Nicely concentrated and sweet, with flavors of black cherry, spices and meat. A bit youthfully closed today but offers good intensity and a rather round texture. Finishes with sweet tannins, noteworthy richness and lingering minerality. Not exactly charming today but displays a sappy freshness and notes of rosemary and white pepper. "The 2004s show more spices and culinary herbs than fruits and flowers," noted Roumier.
