Vagliagli. Sangiovese, Merlot and Colorino. Mid-to-deep ruby with orange tinges. A nose that is already developing and with ripe cherry fruit and hints of tobacco leaf. Sappy and juicy cherry fruit with a big dollop of rustic tannins that demand hearty food. (WS)

A ripe ruby color, the 2021 Chianti Classico offers a polished perfume of toasted cedar, cherry liqueur, candied roses, and crushed rosemary. Medium to full-bodied, it has a nice balance of ripeness and fresh tension, with fine tannins, a supple texture, and a soft, stony texture followed by a salty finish with notes of high-quality black tea. It is a very appealing wine from the Borgo Scopeto team that will be best enjoyed over the next 4-6 years. Since purchasing the estate in 1997, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini has been leading the operations of Borgo Scopeto, and today she is joined by her daughter Allesandra Angelini, who directs export management. They are also the owners of two other notable wineries in Tuscany, Altessino and Caparzo in Montalcino. Massimo Bracalente is the winemaker, and together they oversee all operations.
This is an extremely bright and versatile entry-level wine that delivers good value. The Borgo Scopeto 2021 Chianti Classico (with an ample 170,000 bottles made) is 90% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot and 5% Colorino aged quickly in Slavonian oak casks for one year. You get lots of pretty fruit here with red cherry, blueberry and cassis. There is a hint of soft ripeness on the palate, but the wine ends with pretty earthy sensations and spice.
