Tasting notes
This wine is packaged in a transparent glass bottle that accentuates its luminous ruby color. Il Carnasciale's 2018 Valdarno di Sopra Sangiovese Ottantadue is an elegant and pure wine that delivers lifted aromas of wild cherry, forest berry, rose hip, bitter almond and savory rosemary essence. Both steel tank and cement are used in winemaking. The purity of the grape is very impressive in this expression from Valdarno di Sopra near Arezzo in eastern Tuscany. This is a wild and largely unexplored corner of the region, and this wine reflects its surroundings in its vivid, almost untamed personality. Compared to the inaugural 2017 vintage released last year, this vintage delivers a superior sense of sharpness and focus, with a lean and polished mouthfeel. This is a very unique and special interpretation of Tuscany's leading grape variety.

The 2018 Ottantadue, 100% Sangiovese, is a total knock-out. Dark ruby red, 2018 delivers a whole range of Sangiovese flavors in an exuberant style that is incredibly appealing. Sweet dark cherry, cedar, leather, spice and earthy notes abound. The 2018 is powerful and perhaps a bit wild, but I appreciate its unruly personality. There is no shortage of character.
The name of this wine refers to the estate's house number. 'Although there isn’t a house anywhere near us ours has the number 82 and I always wanted to do something with this number.' 100% Sangiovese, bottled in clear glass 'to indicate that the wine mustn’t be aged first, like Le Carnasciale [their top wine]'. 100% Sangiovese. Lustrous, youthful ruby. This is all about freshness and drinking right now, with a clear white-glass bottle to emphasise that message. Spicy, crushed red fruit which is a little reductive right now but decanting will do the job. Supple, cool-edged sweet red fruit with elegant, medium-weight palate. You finish the bottle in no time. Light, yet long and a fascinating interpretation of Tuscan Sangiovese you haven't seen before. (WS)
