Tasting notes
Dark violet. Sexy vanillin oak and Asian spice qualities dominate ripe cherry and blackberry preserve aromas, with deeper espresso and tobacco adding depth. Lush, creamy and sweet, showing a strong oaky personality, perhaps at the expense of its suave red and dark berry liqueur flavors. As attractive as this is, I wonder if the wood is going to have the final say.

The 2004 Carodorum Special Selection comes from 100+-year-old Tinta de Toro vines and spent 18 months aging in French oak. Like the other Carodorum wines, it was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The 2004 Special Selection is saturated purple/black in color and is a beast in personality with its soaring nose of violet, chocolate, licorice and blueberry and huge, layered palate of blueberry and blackberry and ample ripe tannin leading to a richly fruity finish. This large-scaled wine could easily withstand 8-10 years of cellaring and would drink well for another 20+ years thereafter. Importer: F.L. Navarro, Quality Wines of Spain, New York, NY; tel.
