The 2021 Mencia (Sonoma County) from a top site in Green Valley, is outrageously beautiful. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, chocolate, leather, licorice and menthol are all dialed up. The fruit profile is decidedly forward, and yet all of that richness is achieved at a modest 12.8% alcohol. The 100% stems are not at all evident in this intriguing and delicious red.

From DuMOL’s estate vineyard . This was the second vintage, with DuMOL making the first. Very deep crimson. A bit tight and uncharming compared with Mencía in its native Bierzo. Tough. Dry finish. (JR)
