Score 90/100 · Drink 2018-2026, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Apr 2018

Malvira's 2010 Barolo shows the elegance and grace of this classic vintage with a more approachable and accessible style. The wine offers soft fruit aromas of dried blueberry and black currant. Spicy tones of cinnamon and campfire ash appear on the finish. Fruit is sourced from the La Morra township. Only 3,200 bottles were made.

A huge, intense wine, Malvirà 2010 Barolo hits the palate with tons of dark black fruit, licorice, spices, new leather and oak. The style is all about power and volume. It will be interesting to see if the Boiolo acquires more finesse with future vintages. Today, this first effort from Malvirà is a bit bombastic.

La Morra. Quite dark and lacklustre. Well-judged oak on the nose if a little obvious and minty. Yet more oak on the palate, which at this stage is slightly dominant but the fruit comes out on the finish. Noticeable tannins from the oak, but gravelly rather than dry. (WS)
