The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is deeply satisfying, with a burst of dried black cherries, clove, allspice, balsam herbs and citrus reaching up from the glass. Its textures are pure elegance, silken and pliant, ushering in masses of ripe cherry-berry fruit. Gently tannic yet inviting, it leaves a subtle mineral tinge and cascade of inner florals and spice that linger long. Absolutely glorious. The 2006 represents a move away from barrique aging of La Serena's Brunello.

Very candied fruit, liquorice, wonderful sieved tannins. Bronzed, developed, luscious. Utterly different from the 2007, but equally authentic. (RH)

Good dark red. Fascinating, enticing aromas of wild strawberry, green cardamom, flowers and mango, plus a suggestion of white fruits. A supple, chewy midweight, with rich flavors of redcurrant, pomegranate and guava lifted by a lively floral element. This spicy, elegant, nicely balanced wine finishes with substantial broad, dusty tannins and very good length, plus a late note of apricot. Very much a "northern" style of Brunello.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is an exciting, full-throttle wine bursting with dark fruit, mocha, chocolate, spices, roasted coffee beans and spices. The intensity of the fruit builds towards the enveloping, round finish. Despite its size, the wine is already pretty open. I don't think this will be a long-term ager, but it should drink very nicely over the medium term.
