Mocha, espresso, plums, black cherries and new leather are some of the notes that open up in Poggio Antico's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. Ample, broad and intense, the 2004 preserves impeccable balance throughout. All the elements come together in a striking Brunello that showcases the Poggio Antico style at its best. This is a strong showing.

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is marvelous wine graced with expression violets, black cherries, minerals, spices and subtle French oak. There is gorgeous clarity to be found in the glass, along with a beautiful balance of density and structure. The finish is long, vibrant and seductive. This looks to be relatively accessible early based on the sheer seductiveness of the fruit, yet the wine has plenty of stuffing to age gracefully for years. It is a beautiful effort from Poggio Antico. The Riserva spent one year in 500-liter French oak barrels, followed by two years in Slavonian oak casks.

Very dark, impenetrable. Opens with nutmeg, hints of black pepper becoming increasingly more complex with aeration, followed by wonderful intense but not overtly sweet fruit. Long and persistent finish with flattering crunchy tannins. Distinctly international apppearance, but very well made. (WS)
