70% Sangiovese, 30% Canaiolo. Yields 6,000 kg/ha. From the 12-ha Monticchio vineyard situated on a hillside at 300 m. Fermented in stainless steel with 15-20 days maceration; aged in oak barriques and barrels for 12 months followed by light filtering and four years in bottle. TA 4.9 g/l, pH 3.65, RS trace. 50,000 bottles. Quite a ripe dried-fruit nose. Lacks a bit of freshness (apparently 2007 was even hotter!). Clean and dusty. Hard work now – needs time! (JR)

The 2006 Torgiano Rosso Riserva Rubesco Vigna Monticchio is 70% Sangiovese and 30% Canaiolo aged one year in oak. It is also by far the estate's best wine. It possesses gorgeous balance in its layers of fleshy fruit, bright acidity and an outstanding finish that wraps around the palate. Now, if only all of the estate's other wines were at this level...

It possesses gorgeous balance in its layers of fleshy fruit, bright acidity and an outstanding finish that wraps around the palate. Now, if only all of the estate's other wines were at this level?Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026. With few exceptions, this is a fairly pedestrian showing from one of Umbria's historic estates. It's hard not to think Lungarotti should be operating at a far higher level across the board. Importer: Vin Divino, Ltd., Chicago, IL; tel. (773) 334-6700

70% Sangiovese 30% Canaiolo. An excellent season with production yields within the norm, just slightly higher than 2005. During the entire summer, temperatures were within the average range and slightly cooler on average with respect to 2005; August was a dry month and as in 2005, towards the end of the month there was a positive return to greater day-and-night temperature ranges. Aged 12 months in French oak barriques. Sweet vanilla note at first and more open than the 2005. Cassis and cherry and a hint of yeast extract meatiness. Slightly lighter than the 2005 but still so dense and tight, lovely pure dark fruit. Bags of oak spice and a touch of char. A real baby but showing its pedigree. Tannins quite dry at the moment, waiting to soften and flesh out, but not drying. (JH)
