From the partnership of enologist Philippe Cambie with Gilles Ferran (of Domaine des Escaravailles) comes Calendal's 2016 Cotes du Rhone Villages Plan de Dieu. A poster child for Cambie's style, it showcases ripe black-cherry fruit, plenty of weight and richness on the palate, velvety tannins and hints of baking spices. It's a lush, easy-drinking wine to enjoy over the first 4-5 years of its life.

My money is on the 2016 Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan De Dieu Calendal, from brilliant consultant Philippe Cambie, being the finest example of this cuvée to date, and it’s certainly one of the finest Côtes du Rhônes ever produced as well. Made from 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre brought up in barrel, this full-bodied beauty boasts a saturated purple color as well as a huge nose of cassis, toasted spices, crushed flowers, and hints of garrigue. It’s round and opulent, yet also elegant, with rock-solid underlying structure. Don’t miss it.
