Score 92/100 · Drink 2020-2035, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, Dec 2019

The 2016 Syrah Forgotten Hills Vineyard displays classic Syrah notes on the nose, with an iron-rich core framed by blackberry jus and subtle underlying tones of a soft steaminess and delicate purple flower character. Medium to full-bodied in the mouth, the wine splashes the palate with a black-fruited core and black peppercorns, showing a genuine focus and balance across the mid-palate. It finishes with long, grippy tannins in its youth, so lay it down to let it mature or enjoy with food while it's still young. Only 230 cases were produced.

The ruby-colored 2016 Syrah Forgotten Hills has a Pinot Noir-like style in its light red fruits and stemmy, pepper notes and is medium-bodied, supple, lightly textured, and elegant. It’s certainly not going to make anyone forget the 2015, but it’s nevertheless an outstanding wine. While I continue to love the wines from Gramercy Cellars, I found these latest releases, while still outstanding, to be a clear step down from previous vintages.

Medium red, not hugely brilliant. A distinct element of herbacity to the aromas of raspberry and red pepper. Saline flavors of red berries, pepper and tomato convey an impression of modest ripeness. Reasonably supple but it's hard to believe that this wine will ever really blossom in the bottle. Finishes with a peppery greenness and light, fine-grained tannins. This reminded me of the lower-octane, less generous wines that Greg Harrington was making eight to ten years ago. (just 12.5% alcohol)
