Score 91/100 · Drink 2016-2025, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Jun 2016

From a vintage that yielded slightly erratic results for Syrah, the 2013 Syrah Forgotten Hills is a beautiful effort that comes from a cool site on the eastern edge the Walla Walla Valley AVA. Medium ruby colored and slightly translucent, it offers a pure, fresh and focused style while not sacrificing depth and richness. Black cherries, blackberries, bouquet garni, dried violets and plenty of spice emerge from this elegant, medium to full-bodied, slightly restrained and focused 2013. It has good fruit and nicely integrated, present acidity, but is closed and a touch backward at present. Give bottles 2-4 years of cellaring and enjoy through 2025.

(vinified with 50% whole clusters): Bright, dark red. Musky aromas of raspberry, brown spices, chicory and earth. Supple and saline on the palate, with sneaky inner-mouth lift to the flavors of red fruits, spices, smoked meat, hot rocks and earth. A very dry, soil-driven style that's not at all about fruit; a bit narrow today. Still tight and a bit peppery on the firmly tannic finish. Will this gain in flesh and sweetness with bottle aging?
