Score 89/100 · Drink 2018-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2018
The 2016 Merlot Estate is a very pretty, entry-level red from Clos du Val. Blackberry jam, chocolate, new leather and dark spice are nicely pushed forward in this succulent, racy Merlot. Drink this mid-weight, fragrant Merlot over the next handful of years. The 2016 is a blend of fruit from Clos du Val's Hirondelle and Carneros properties.

The 2016 Merlot is deep purple-black and opens with youthful notes of crushed red and black plums, warm blackberries and Black Forest cake with touches of spice box and forest floor. Soft, full, rich and seductive in the mouth, it delivers bags of spicy black fruit and a peppery finish.
