Tasting notes
Leading off the 2015s, which Andy said might be his favorite Chardonnay vintage ever, the 2015 Chardonnay Charles Heintz has a racy, vibrant style as well as plenty of citrus blossom, lemon rind, and honeycomb aromas and flavors. It’s medium-bodied, pure, and elegant on the palate, with a deep, earth, minerality. I still remember tasting with Andy Smith while I was writing The Rhône Report and I was thrilled to be able to sit down and go through all of his wines on this occasion. Stylistically, Smith makes a fresh, vibrant style of wine, yet I never find them lacking for depth and or texture. Looking at the Chardonnays, these are made in a reductive, age-worthy style and the clear majority have distinctly Burgundian profiles. These are beautiful wines that, at least to my palate, surpass the quality of the Pinot Noirs, which are slightly more variable. Nevertheless, the top Pinot Noirs are certainly up with the crème de la crème of the region. While Andy favors a tight, age-worthy style of Chardonnay, the Pinot Noirs are made in a slightly more forward style. In addition to the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, DuMOL also produces a handful of world-class Syrahs, as well as one of the top examples of Viognier coming out of California. Both the 2015s and 2016s reviewed here are terrific wines, with the 2016s showing slightly more balance and elegance, but you can’t go wrong with either vintage here.

The 2015 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard opens with gregarious honeydew melon, ripe peaches and pink grapefruit notes with touches of allspice, jasmine and mandarin peel. Full-bodied with a decadent oiliness to the texture, it has a racy backbone lifting the opulent fruit and a very long finish.
Just as compelling from bottle as it was from barrel, the 2015 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard is absolutely gorgeous. Fresh, radiant and expressive, the 2015 is endowed with terrific depth and layers of flavors. This is an especially polished Charles Heintz Chardonnay that offers quite a bit of aromatic depth and fewer of the more tropical, botrytized-inflected notes that are often found in wines from Charles Heintz. Orange peel, mint, tangerine and sweet spice infuse the finish in this super-expressive Chardonnay.
The 2015 Chardonnay Isobel Charles Heintz Vineyard is lush, tropical and exotic, with striking intensity allied to pure power. Apricot, chamomile, mango, white flowers and vanillin all reinforce the wine's extroverted, unctuous feel. Even with all of its intensity, the 2015 retains gorgeous acidity and freshness. This is a gorgeous and very complete Chardonnay from DuMol.
