Score 87/100 · Drink 2018-2022, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Oct 2016
Bright medium ruby. Vaguely resiny, reduced scents of blackberry, blueberry, musky chocolate and tar. Broad and fine-grained but a bit simple and inexpressive in the mouth, perhaps still a bit blocked by reduction. I wanted more clarity of flavor. Finishes with serious tannic clout and a suggestion of porty sweetness.

The outstanding 2013 Syrah Ruckus has lots of floral characteristics as well as classic Red Mountain minerality, cassis and black raspberry fruit. Full-bodied, rich and textured, it should drink beautifully for 5-7 years. Note that the blend here is 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier (no doubt why it’s so floral) and it was aged in 33% new French oak.
