2003 Carl Loewen - Maximiner Riesling Spatlese

A fascinating and enticing nose of white peach, honey, nut oils, grapefruit and crushed stone. Has a brightness and spine that are unusual in this vintage. Combines fabulously juicy fruit, perfectly proportional residual sugar and lovely balance of fruit and mineral. There is a terrifically nuanced and long procession of flavors in this reflection of an obviously great if long-neglected site, whose full name is Detzemer Maximiner Klosterberg. 2 stars.
