The 2012 Pinot Noir Alder Springs Vineyard comes from a high elevation site seven miles from the Pacific Ocean planted between 2,100 and 2,600 feet. It is a complex blend of many Dijon clones, the Joseph Swan, Pommard and Calera clones. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by notes of rose petals, spring flowers, raspberries, black cherries, underbrush and wet rocks, the latter component giving the wine a striking minerality. About 10% whole clusters were used in the initial fermentation, and the wine was aged in 50% new French oak and bottled without fining or filtration. Drink now-2023.

Bright, full red. Aromas of cassis, raspberry, black cherry, mint and crushed stone, accented by a high note of wild sage. Dark, broad and slightly medicinal, with the minty note carrying through in the mouth. I don't find the complexity promised by the nose. The big, dusty tannins show a slightly dry edge.
