Score 90/100 · Drink 2020-2030, Jeb Dunnuck, Nov 2020

Attractive notes of red and black currants, green tobacco, truffle, cedar, and smoked herbs emerge from the 2009 Château Olivier, a wine from the deep, gravelly soils of the Graves region of Bordeaux. With medium-bodied richness, a silky, evolved, endearing texture, still present tannins, and solid length, this charming, balanced, satisfying Bordeaux should be drunk over the coming decade.

Both bottles had something bacterial on the nose. Tough finish. No charm. (JR)

Red-ruby. Plum, mocha, underbrush, licorice and a whiff of herbs on the nose. Broad, supple and lightly saline, with a pliant texture to the plum, mocha and tobacco flavors. Finishes with slightly dusty tannins that turn drier with air. Not bad, but doesn't quite come alive in the mouth.

About the producer

Square Chateau Olivier
Olivier

Ch. Olivier is one of the few actual castles in Bordeaux – coming with a moat and drawbridge. Since Alexandre de Bethmann took over here in 2012, the château has been given a new lease of life, with quality on the rise.
