Intense black fruit, smoke, licorice, underbrush and a host of ferrous notes abound in the 2011 Grenache Noir, which emerges from parcel in El Dorado. The 2011 boasts plenty of depth and intensity, although it remains a bit four-square and chunky. In this vintage the Grenache is dominated by gamy notes that may appeal to some readers a bit more than they do to me.

Vivid red. Aromas of red berries, minerals and potpourri, with a sexy Asian spice quality building with air. The palate shows good verve and clarity to the raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. A bright mineral note adds cut to the long, juicy, floral finish. This lively wine reminded me a lot of a top-notch Beaujolais.
