Mature, crushed red fruits, rose hip, iron-tinged fruits. A resolved palate that still has surprisingly firm tannins. In a wonderful place at the moment. Drinking very well. Clean and layered finish – sweet and with good freshness to keep it lively. (AC)

Significantly past its peak, the 1989 Chateauneuf du Pape is pale and browning in color. Morbidly attractive notes of dried leaves, decay and dusty, drying tannins are all that's left.
