Tasting notes
(includes a healthy dollop of young-vines Santenots juice and a few barrels of the Clos des Chenes, which was hit hard by hail in '04) Good dark red. Ripe aromas of black cherry and chocolate. Dense and fairly concentrated, but with a slightly gritty texture for Volnay. There's something roasted and a bit autumnal here but the wine has firm acidity. Finishes with fine, slightly drying tannins.

(racked one week ago) Good bright red. Pure, floral aromas of cherry and raspberry. Supple, sweet and nicely delineated, with pretty, succulent red fruit flavors. This should drink well young. Lafon will probably include his Volnay Clos des Chenes in this blend. He thought he picked these hailed-on vines a bit early, and indeed my sample showed a rather lean wine with pepper and herbal nuances and modest sweetness. This juice, though, should add spine to the village offering.
