Tasting notes
The 2017 Syrah Tinaquaic Vineyard comes from a site outside of Santa Maria and saw 25% new French oak. Its deep purple color is followed by complex notes of bay leaf, red plums, candied violets, cedarwood and ground pepper. This ripe, full-bodied beauty has loads of fruit, a solid spine of acidity, and a great finish. It's one of those wines that has cool-climate-like aromatics yet still offers loads of opulence on the palate. It's brilliantly done and will keep for a decade.

The 2017 Syrah Tinaquaic Vineyard Old Vines - Dry Farmed, from vines planted in 1989 at the top of the canyon, is wonderfully nuanced and complex, with more aromatic layers than the straight Tinaquaic Syrah tasted alongside it. A whole range of floral and savory overtones develop as this hugely promising wine opens up with a bit of air. I tasted the 2017 from tank just prior to bottling.
