Score 89/100 · Drink 2002-2014, Robert Parker, Dec 2000

From Spring Mountain, Beringer is producing a Marston Vineyard Syrah. The 1998 exhibits a dense opaque purple color, copious quantities of blackberry, mineral, tar, and licorice aromas and flavors, medium to full body, and sweet tannin in the finish. Medium ruby. Spicy, enticing aromas of black raspberry, smoked meat, clove and spearmint. Offers good juicy intensity in the mouth, with mineral and graphite nuances. The succulent acids carry through to the lingering finish. Seems a bit less extracted than the '97, and all to the better.
