Tasting notes
The 2004 Montebaco Vendimia Seleccionada is also 100% Tempranillo from 60-year-old estate vineyards. It was aged for 16 months in 100% new French oak before being bottled unfiltered. Purple-colored, it offers an attractive perfume of pain grille, mineral, espresso, violets, and blackberry. Dense, layered, and balanced, the wine needs 1-2 years to reveal its full potential and should drink well through 2020. Importer: Jose Pastor, Vinos and Gourmet, Richmond, CA; tel. (510) 237-0077

Bright ruby. Sexy raspberry, kirsch, tobacco and anise aromas are strikingly expansive and pure. This gets all over the palate, showing deep, sweet red berry flavors and a rich, chewy texture. As packed with flavor as it is, there's surprising elegance and precision to the wine's long, spicy finish. This is already delicious, but I would not hesitate to stash a few bottles away for another four or five years.
