Score 89/100 · Drink 2006-2014, Daniel Thomases, Wine Advocate, Apr 2004

The 2001 Tenuta di Belguardo, made from Bordeaux grapes, is rather California-Australia-like in its coconut, vanilla, black fruit nose, more concentrated and intense than the Morellino di Scansano but still a bit austere and severe on the close. Belguardo is the property of the Mazzei family, owners of Castello di Fonterutoli in Chianti, among the first to move into the Maremma in search of new territory to plant vineyards. The vines are still young here, and there is unquestionably much margin for improvement in the wines. Drink: 2006-2014. Importer: William Grant & Sons, Edison, NJ; tel. (732) 225-9000
