Tasting notes
The 2020 Loner Chardonnay The Thirty-Five Sweet Goodbyes comes from the John Sebastiano vineyard and was matured for 26 months in used French oak and stainless steel. It opens with chalk and saline before revealing scents of apricot, beeswax and meringue. The medium-bodied palate features expansive, savory layers, and it balances a mouth-coating texture with mouthwatering acidity that calls you in for another sip. It opens dramatically as it spends time in the glass and will benefit from 2-3 years in bottle or a couple of hours in a decanter. 225 cases were made.

The 2020 Chardonnay The 35 from John Sebastiano, is a potent, savory wine that very much reflects the wild personality of this site. Savory and mineral notes abound, while fruit is very much pushed into the background. Aging in large format oak and stainless steel results in a transparent, almost stark, Chardonnay, that is quite striking.
Lots of ripe lemon, chamomile, honeysuckle, and white flower notes emerge from the 2020 Loner Chardonnay The Thirty-Five Sweet Goodbyes, a medium-bodied, beautifully textured Chardonnay that gains depth and richness with air. Also offering some background toasty, nutty nuances and a great finish, it's a classy, impressive Chardonnay from Mathias. It’s always a blast tasting through the lineup from Matthias Pippig, and while it’s always a little bit of a roller coaster given the divergent varieties and styles, the wines never lack for character.
