The 2014 Loner Pinot Noir Whale Song comes from the John Sebastiano Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and saw 40% stems and 12 months in neutral oak, followed by 16 months in used 500-liter barrels. Its plummy color is followed by meaty, chewy aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, chocolate, spice box, and earth. It's big, chunky mouthful of a Pinot Noir that has plenty of sweet fruit, a foursquare style, and a good finish. Drink it over the coming 2-4 years.

The 2014 Loner Pinot Noir Whale Song, from John Sebastiano, is a very pretty, if somewhat eccentric wine. Dried cherry, spice, cedar, tobacco and menthol give the 2014 striking aromatic nuance. Two years in oak, long for Pinot, yields a wine with lovely aromatic complexity, soft contours and a good deal of overall complexity, but also slightly high-toned, volatile aromatics as well. There is certainly no shortage of personality.

The 2014 Loner Pinot Noir Whale Song comes from the John Sebastiano vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. It has a medium ruby-garnet color and a nose I can't believe for this five-year-old Pinot Noir: super intense and concentrated, with aromas of warm cinnamon, dried red and black currants, prosciutto, pepper, olive hints, blueberries, orange peel, violets and black tea. The medium-bodied palate is silky soft but structured by very fine, ripe tannins and juicy freshness, with very intense savory flavors and tons of fruit still on offer, finishing long and savory. Holy smokes!
