From the Hyland Vineyard – planted with the Coury clone in 1972 at 675 ft on red volcanic Jory and Nekia soils. Hand-destemmed, pedicel by pedicel à la Leroy. Whole-berry fermented with indigenous yeast in 500-litre terracotta amphorae imported from Tuscany and then aged for 12 months in French oak (20% new) followed by six months in stainless steel. Pale ruby with a transparent rim. Pretty excitingly funky on the nose. Very pure, clean fruit. Much more obviously transparent than its Chardonnay stablemates. Without either rhubarb notes or obvious sweetness. Very satisfying, though possibly without the longevity of the Chardonnays. Throat-soothing on the finish but delicate on the palate. Best served cellar cool, I suspect. A promising start! (JR)

Pale ruby-purple, the 2017 Pinot Noir Hyland has a core of red currants, red berries and blackberries with dried leaves, pipe tobacco, scorched earth, tar and cured meat aromas plus accents of blood orange, potpourri, tobacco and sweet spices. Medium-bodied, silky and intense, it offers great layering of spice, amaro, earth and berry fruits with addicting freshness and a long, nuanced finish.

This has such complex spice, earth, charcuterie, cola and vibrant red cherries with a subtly leafy and earthy edge. Impressive. The palate carries a bold array of rich red and dark cherries with a composed, fresh and neatly defined, athletic feel. Holds the finish so well. Drink or hold.
