Tasting notes
The 2018 1/1 is a single barrel of Syrah from own-rooted Estrella clone Syrah and a touch of co-fermented Viognier from John Sebastiano. The 60% whole clusters give the 2018 a decidedly savory, aromatic personality. It will be interesting to see if the fruit emerges, as today, it is very much in the background, while the tannins feel a bit dry.

The 2018 Syrah 1/1 sports a plum hue as well as a medium to full-bodied, beautifully polished, elegant, silky style. Based on 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier, all from the John Sebastiano vineyard, and aged 26 months in new 500-liter puncheons, it has a rock star nose of red and black currants, smoked herbs, sandalwood, and cigar that develops beautifully with time in the glass. The tannins here are spot on, it has plenty of mid-palate depth, and it’s just a savory, complex, incredibly well-done Syrah that will have 10-15 years of longevity.
