Reminding me of a great Côte Rôtie, the 2015 1/1 (Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier) gives up complex notes of ripe red and black fruits, olives, spring flowers, and bacon fat. It’s slightly more elegant and evolved than the Bossman release, is full-bodied, silky, and incredibly elegant. In short, it’s another beautiful, singular wine from this estate.

The 2015 1/1 is 100% Estrella clone Syrah, with dollops of Grenache and Viognier, from a parcel in John Sebastiano. Super-ripe red cherry, pomegranate, sage, mint and anise are wonderfully lifted in an aromatically expressive, sumptuous Syrah that speaks with real personality. Mattias Pippig's wines are especially compelling when they meld together intensity with nuance, as is very much the case here.
The 2015 Syrah 1/1 is lovely, wafting from the glass with a heady bouquet of violets, rose petal, black raspberries, orange rind, rich spice and licorice. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and savory, with a deep and open-knit core of dark, tarry fruit, good concentration and a long, expansive finish. Like all the wines in the Sanguis range, this is decidedly lavish and sun-kissed, but the Syrah 1/1 also captures the greatest complexity and intrigue.
