Score 93/100 · Drink 2014-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2012

Black cherries, plums, tobacco and grilled herbs jump from the glass in the 2009 La Palette. A gorgeous, sumptuous wine, the 2009 impresses for its silkiness and total finesse. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is superb. With air, the 2009 can be enjoyed now, but there is more than enough energy to allow it to be cellared for up to a decade. The 2009 is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot.

There is so much to love about these classy, harmonious wines, it’s hard to know where to start. This year Culler has a new, entry-level Cabernet that is one of the very best wines in its price range. Tel. (707) 257-0567; info@cullerwines.com

(a 92/8 blend of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot): Medium ruby. Cassis, blueberry, sassafras, tobacco and smoked meat on the nose. Supple, spicy and sweet, with good balancing acidity to frame the blackberry, cassis and licorice flavors. This energetic wine possesses a firm spine of dusty, chocolatey tannins for mid-term aging.
