Tasting notes
The 2018 Pinot Noir Frei Road Vineyard is stunning, with singular blueberry, gravel dust and Earl Grey tea aromas on the nose, gaining details like aniseed and rosewater as it spends time in the glass. The palate is silky and generous, with layers of fruit, flowers, charcuterie and spice, bursts of juicy acidity, an abundance of silty tannins and a long, lifted finish. This pure, vibrant cuvée is beautiful now but deserves another 2-3 years in bottle.

Lastly, the 2018 Pinot Noir Frei Road Vineyard has loads of mulled cherry and black raspberry fruits as well as medium to full body, incredible intensity and depth, integrated acidity, and a beautiful array of wildflowers, candied violets, and damp forest floor. Reminding me of Grand Cru Red Burgundy, this brilliant, seamless Sonoma Coast Pinot will probably merit a triple-digit rating in 3-4 years and have 15 years or more of overall longevity. Hats off to the team at Ferren for another incredible lineup of wines!
The 2018 Pinot Noir Frei Road is a total pleasure bomb. Even so, it is one of the classiest Pinots Matt Courtney has made at Ferren. In the glass, the 2018 is dark, sensual and inviting, with tremendous resonance that builds over time. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather and chocolate notes form into the huge, dense finish.
