The 2021 Chardonnay Maigold was barrel fermented and matured in 40% new French oak (primarily Damy). It has alluringly savory scents of roasted almonds, honeycomb and flint complementing a core of baked apple, peach and jasmine. The medium-bodied palate begins flinty and bright before fleshing out its luxurious, honey-nut flavors as it glides through the mouth. It's balanced by firm, focused acidity and has a kiss of texture that lengthens the finish. It will benefit from 2-3+ years in bottle.

The 2021 Chardonnay Marigold Roserock is simply stunning, blending lemon curd notes with crushed mint leaf and hints of cardamon. It is plush and enveloping, with a balancing core of fresh acidity and minerals, washing over the palate with suggestions of baked apple and pear accentuated by sweet spice. This finishes clean and remarkably fresh, leaving a staining of nectarine and liquid stone.
Taking on more savory and darker mineral tones, the 2021 Chardonnay Rose Rock Maigold pours a bright yellow hue and offers up the sunny freshness of citrus, with notes of Meyer lemon, ripe herbs, and wet asphalt. Ripe yet driving, the palate is medium to full-bodied, with an ample soft texture, and has persistent and bright acidity. Drink 2024-2034. This was my second visit to the estate of Domaine Drouhin, where I met with David Millman and assistant winemaker Arron Bell. This benchmark estate was founded in 1987 in the Dundee Hills by the Burgundian estate Maison Joseph Drouhin, and fourth-generation winemaker Veronique Drouhin-Boss oversees the estate today. Given Domaine Drouhin’s commanding presence in the region, it’s always fantastic to see when the wines reach and even exceed expectations across the portfolio, as they have certainly done in the 2021 vintage.
