The Syrah-based 2019 Optimist (there's 30% Cabernet Franc, 7% Viognier, and a splash of Roussanne) reveals a ruby/plum color as well as a great nose of ripe, gamey black fruits, ground pepper, sandalwood, and iron. One of the standouts in the lineup, it has medium to full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, supple tannins, and a great finish. There's a certain old-school Saint-Joseph-like vibe here, and it should age well for 10-15 years, although it's solid today. While I always love the wines from Matthias Pippig, some of these latest releases played in what I call the “more interesting than good” category. While all good, there are hits and misses here.

The 2019 Optimist is bright and punchy, with Grenache red-toned fruit very much driving the blend. Sweet floral and spice notes add aromatic presence to play off the cherry, red plum and pomegranate fruit. This racy, mid-weight red will be easy to enjoy upon release.
