Score 96/100 · Drink 2002-2017, Robert Parker, Feb 2002
The blockbuster 1999 Syrah Thompson Vineyard boasts an opaque black/purple color as well as a bouquet that is the essence of smoky Syrah. Fried bacon intermixed with cassis, barbecue spice, and blackberry aromas are followed by an unctuously-textured, full-bodied, deep, sensationally pure, prodigious Syrah to drink now and over the next 12-15 years. Saturated ruby. Aromas of raw black fruits, mocha and smoky oak, with a wild meaty quality. Powerful and large-scaled, with blackberry and graphite flavors framed by strong acidity. In a rather extractive style but retains good freshness. The substantial, broad tannins avoid dryness.
