The 2005 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges 1er Cru is both bold and expressive on the nose with black fruit, pressed iris flowers and a hint of iodine. I appreciate the delineation, not to mention the complexity that emerges after 30 minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, quite structured as most 2005s have remained, but it is redeemed by a wonderful line of acidity. Perhaps I would have preferred more flesh towards the saline finish but that might develop with time. One for the patient. Tasted at the Gouges retrospective at La Cabotte.

Ruby-red. Tighter, high-pitched aromas of black raspberry, spices and flowers. Dominated today by its spine but this tactile wine is stuffed with material and is surprisingly easy to taste today. Quite sturdy on the back end but with very good black peppery lift. The tannins are firm but broad and sweet. If you have to open these 2005s soon, make sure to give them time in a decanter, notes Gouges.

Cask sample. Monopole. Thick, dense, chewy and lively. A bit tough and stolid. (JR)

The 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Clos des Porrets St.-Georges – a roughly nine acre Gouges monopole in Premeaux-Prissey – offers a meld of tart and lightly cooked cherry, abundant tannins conducive to a somewhat furry mouth feel, and a smoky, roasted meat, cooked cherry and cherry pit finish. There is no question about this wine’s overall density, nor its intensity of ripe fruit. Similarly, I have little doubt it is showing the roughed-up effects of having been bottled only a week before I tasted. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802
