Bright ruby-red. Wild crushed blackberry, tar, licorice and a meaty whiff of reduction on the complex nose. Juicy, reduced and a bit tart-edged, with a slightly disjointed quality to the crushed berry and dried fruit flavors. A distinctly dry style, even a bit austere on the back, with firm tannic spine and elevated acids.

The 2005 Charbono, a varietal that Foley has done well with in the past, seems tart, superficial, and lacking texture. It is a pleasant red for uncritical quaffing. Previously recommended: 2004 Charbono (90), 2003 Claret (96), 2003 Petite Sirah (92). Tel. (707) 965-2669; Fax (707) 965-0969
