Inky purple. Captivating, deeply pitched aromas of cherry-vanilla, cassis, licorice and tobacco. Dense, sweet and intense, with serious grip and underlying structure to the bitter cherry, dark berry and oak spice flavors; an intriguing floral element comes up as the wine sits in the glass. Full but surprisingly light on its feet. This dense, sappy wine really stains the mouth, finishing long and sweet, with youthfully gripping tannins and a lingering perfume of crystallized flowers.

A wine that remains somewhat closed and austere is the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard. Performing better than it did last year, it needs 5-6 years of bottle age, and should keep for 25-30 years. Its dense purple color is followed by notes of wet stones, smoked herbs, black currants, and ink. Deep, rich, backward, and ageworthy, it should be forgotten for a few years, and drunk over the following three decades. This is a brilliant portfolio of Cabernet Sauvignons from Paul Hobbs, one of the wine world’s top consultants whose own California projects are augmented by his superb work in Argentina. Paul Hobbs is one of California wine’s biggest names. Twice named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker, he joined Robert Mondavi in 1977, worked at Opus One and Simi before setting up his eponymous winery in 1991.
