Tasting notes
Not shy or subtle, the 2008 Relic Wines Syrah Scarpa is a blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Petite Verdot that delivers exuberant aromatics of blackberry, crème de cassis, sage, black olive, and roasted meat. This opens beautifully with air, showing more complexity, as well as depth. Full bodied and fantastic on the palate, the wine possesses a stunningly rich, yet light texture, superb balance, and a chewy, long finish. Impressive and given how well it’s showing now, I wouldn’t hesitate to start opening bottles.

(blended with 8% petite sirah) Good full ruby. Liqueur-like aroma of black cherry lifted by violet; slightly porty. Boasts excellent fruit intensity but comes across today as extremely primary, even unformed. Finishes tight but long, with the violet note repeating. Hirby was planning to bottle this the week after my visit, and I'd expect this wine to require at least several years of aging to express itself.
